Casting director Marci Liroff had originally chosen another boy, even organizing a Dungeons & Dragons playdate at screenwriter Melissa Mathison’s house to see how the young actors bonded. Within minutes, it was obvious—the original choice was too bossy, and the magic just wasn’t there.
Desperate for a new Elliott, Liroff got a tip from director Jack Fisk about a talented kid he worked with on Raggedy Man. That kid? A young Texan named Henry Thomas.
