This is the story about a man named Stanley. How he first ventured out into the world via Half Life 2. Realizing he was better than this, he sat down at a computer to create his own story. Unfortunately for Stanley, this resulted in a bigger yet more complicated world not dependent on others.

Believe it or not my Geeky Guys and Gals, the first ever The Stanley Parable started life as a Half Life 2 mod. The developer, Davey Wreden, grew tired of how the player's protagonists would blindly follow the game's narration, so set about creating a game based upon the player NOT following the narrator's direction.

His first game required Half Life 2 to be installed. This mod (through blind luck) brought the attention of William Pugh who excels at creating Source-based environments. After putting their heads together (and bringing back Kevan Brighting the in-game narrator), the stand-alone game was born. The full story is here:

If you don't have the full game and currently can't afford it, and nagging your parents/guardians/begging/robbing a bank doesn't get you the dough to buy it, download this mod and give it a whirl. If you do have the full game it may still surprise you about the games origins. Either way I'd very much recommend this mod.

I don't know how the mod works with HL2 files because this mod was released on Nov 10, 2011. Since 2013 Valve has *ahem* generously updated their Source-engine files from the old GCF files to the new VPK (aka SteamPipe) files rendering all other mods that require GCF files to no longer work. However this mod DOES work with the updated Source files so you have NO REASON not to try this out.
