In a recent interview with Famitsu, Smash Bros director Masahiro Sakurai spoke about the future of the series and if it could continue without him. The issue marks the end of Sakurai's bi-monthly column in the magazine after 20 years.
He spoke about the next Smash Bros and if he'd be involved:
▸ “I am not thinking of a sequel... However, I can’t say with certainty that this would be the end of Smash.”
▸ “I need to think whether I must release a Smash game or not, even if I have to do something that would disappoint users.”
▸ “I currently don’t see a path where Smash can be produced without myself.”
▸ “Honestly, we did actually try leaving it to someone else, but it didn’t go well.”
▸ “If the series were to continue, I have to talk with Nintendo and have a debate on whether it will succeed or not. I must think about this topic seriously.”
He also said he wanted to conceal himself for a while and he's not able to say what he's working on next. He said it may be better if people forget about him.
Sakurai also provided some cool new insights into Smash Ultimate's development:
▸ They had originally considered adding aerial smash attacks (ala Nick All-Star Brawl)
▸ Banjo & Kazooie followed Sora in the Fighter's Ballot results
▸ Sora's concept was to make aerial fighting fun even for casual players
▸ He was in charge of Sora's reveal trailer, developed concept based on Disney's guidelines
▸ Joker's development was difficult because it coincided with wrapping up the base game
▸ Arsene also made Joker tough to animate because of the double models
▸ Sakurai played FE: Three Houses at work to create Byleth (bc game wasn't released yet)
▸ Sakurai quizzed staff with finding Enderman in screenshots, to ensure he was visible to play
▸ He was worried about balancing Sephiroth because of his reach
▸ Rex was planned to appear alongside Pyra/Mythra, but couldn't due to hardware limitations
▸ If he had to pick between Pyra/Mythra (if both weren't possible), it would have been Pyra
▸ When balancing fighters, he preferred to not eliminate strong points, but add weaknesses
