Samsung Display, the manufacturer of Quantum Dot OLED TVs for Samsung Electronics, Sony and, potentially, other TV brands keen to embrace the technology, has formally announced that it will be producing a 77-inch Quantum Dot OLED screen in 2023.
This clearly raises expectations that we will see 77-inch QD OLEDs TVs joining the 55 and 65-inch screen sizes launched when QD OLED made its consumer debut in 2022. Especially as the caption for the photograph of its new 77-inch QD-OLED screen contained in its press release today actually says ‘Samsung Display’s super-large 77-inch QD-OLED for TVs’.
Samsung Display has already made other, smaller QD OLED screen sizes beyond the 55 and 65-inch TV sizes for the gaming monitor market. Given the consumer demand for ever bigger TVs, though, especially among home cinema enthusiasts, the addition of a 77-inch QD OLED TV to 2023’s offering would really cement the technology’s position on the home entertainment landscape, addressing as it does arguably the main reason (limited screen sizes) not to buy a QD OLED TV in 2022.
Samsung Display also revealed in its pre-CES announcement today performance enhancing improvements to its QD OLED technology for 2023. Particularly promising is the way a new and improved optimization algorithm called IntelliSense AI combines with a new OLED HyperEfficient EL material to improve the colour brightness of each RGB pixel (remember that QD OLED does away with the white sub-pixel used in regular WOLED panels).
The AI technology collects information on each pixel in real time and uses AI’s Neural network ‘brain’ to more precisely control that pixel’s light while also delivering real time optimised power management, while the new OLED material is applied to QD OLED’s blue emitting layer to ensure that the RGB light that passes through the QD colour conversion layer is brighter and delivers cleaner colour results.
Samsung Display is claiming a peak brightness of 2000 nits for its 2023 QD OLED panels. Samsung didn’t say in its press announcement exactly how it had measured this figure, but I’ve been able to confirm that the 2000 nits figure was generated on a 3% HDR window, while the new screens are managing around 1500 nits on a 10% window. This puts them in more or less the same brightness territory as LG’s new G3 OLEDs - though it seems that when the new QD OLED panels are set up to deliver a reference black level of 0.0005 nits, the 10% window measurement may reduce to around 1300 nits.
Samsung Display is keen to stress, too, that despite managing to substantially increase the brightness of its 2023 QD OLED displays, the new EL material means that it’s simultaneously managed to reduce power consumption versus the 2022 screens by almost 25 percent (down to 79W from 99W).
Samsung Display was also keen in its discussions with me to talk up the advantages it claims QD OLED holds over regular WOLED TVs. In particular, its RGB colour system’s ability to hit 90% of the BT2020 colour scape versus 75.5% with conventional OLED, QD OLED’s supposedly better off-axis uniformity, and its superior - or, at least, easier to achieve - control of near black detailing and pixel transitions from black to non-black.
