Info about this song from the book:
Sand dune (1922)
The place sung about in this poem is the suburb of Niigata City facing the wild Japan Sea. In the pine grove is a shrine called Gokoku Jinja. In its grounds stands a monument built in honor of the poet Hakushu Kitahara and his "Sand Dune." A sandy beach and sand dunes spread along the seashore and silverberry bushes can be seen here and there. They may bear small red berries in the autumn which are seen only by sparrows and boys who meet there. When the sun sets and darkness approaches, the sparrows and boys go home. Shimpei's music is quite unique. It is based on Japanese traditional folk song. His piano accompaniment seems to take free directions regardless of the song's course. This is the reason why his music is highly appreciated.
