Review: 4/5

Sayonara Wild Hearts immediately became one of my favorite indie games upon completing it; the music is great to listen to, the art style is incredible, the mash-up of genres all focused into a rhythm game is a crazy unique gameplay mechanic, and the story told is really beautiful and conveyed in such a creative, symbolic way! I can't get enough of it, and I can easily see this becoming a comfort game to come back to and sink a playthrough in every now and then.

The tone of Sayonara is set from the very beginning as a hopeful story of a shattered heart, and the journey to making it whole once more. The music reflects this- you go from some sad, melancholic melodies to these upbeat and fast-paced songs that make you feel like you're experiencing the main character's recovery. The gameplay matches this as well- in some of the more hectic tracks, you'll be blasting away at robots or doing hand-to-hand combat in an intense showdown, but in other, more mellow tracks, you'll simply be cruising along, collecting hearts.

I think that the coolest feature of this game is all of the shifting perspectives and play styles. In the course of one song, you'll be on a motorcycle in a third-person view, speeding down a highway, and immediately thrust into a first-person view, where you're veering around obstacles at breakneck speeds, just to be thrown into third-person again as your character leaps from her motorcycle to combat a number of femme fatales in midair. It was a good way to keep me engaged throughout any given song, (not that the incredible soundtrack needed any help with that).

The only downside I could see with this game is that it's pretty short- all said and done, my playthrough took me about an hour. If you're not one to replay games, that may not be enough for you, but as I previously mentioned, I will definitely be coming back around to this multiple times. I think it's a really beautiful experience, and I do find a certain charm in a game that can easily be started and completed in a single sitting.
