Review: 4/5

Pokémon Mystery Dungeon is one of the best spin-offs to come out of the massive monster-catching series. It's one of the few games in the franchise that allows you to play AS a Pokémon, and not only that, but it humanizes them and engages you in a better story than you'll find in almost every mainline game that Gamefreak has to offer.

Rescue Team DX is a remake done in just the best way. It maintains the spirit of the original games, brings several quality of life changes to the table, and freshens things up with a new coat of paint. I personally prefer the stylized sprites of the original GBA/DS games, but I can't deny that there's a charm to the storybook-style aesthetic of this modern retelling.

I enjoy the tactics-style gameplay in the Mystery Dungeon games a lot. When choosing moves, you have to keep in mind their range, whether they can cut corners, and of course, type advantage. With the addition of move linking, you can even chain them so that your Pokémon will use a combination of multiple moves every time you use one, allowing for more damage and better strategizing at the cost of burning through PP faster.

It is somewhat turn-based in the sense that, for every action you take, every monster in the dungeon is also going to take an action. You move one tile and every single enemy will also move one tile. Enemy's movements are randomized, (save for when they've spotted you and chase you down with murderous intent), but were typically pretty straightforward, meaning you could easily avoid or intercept them. I enjoy the tactical turn-based system in this game simply because it feels so lively to be playing at the speed you choose, without being bogged down by menus.

The music in the game is great- each dungeon has its own unique track to trek to, and the sound effects are impactful and stand out enough that you always have a firm grasp on your situation in a given dungeon. Obviously this is also able to be observed visually, but I like when a game allows you to focus on the gameplay and saves you from staring at different HUD elements all the time.

The story isn't incredibly innovative or groundbreaking by any stretch of the imagination, but it does a better job at making me connect with the characters and caring about the impact I'm making on the world than the main Pokémon games do. For a franchise that's largely aimed at children, I think Rescue Team DX did a great job in touching on some heavier themes without making it too hard to swallow.

Rescue Team DX is everything I want in a remake, and all I can hope for now is that they eventually remake the Explorers of Sky/Time/Darkness games as well!
