Review: 2/5

I have such mixed feelings about MADiSON, but ultimately, I'd say I enjoyed my time with it. The atmosphere is super well done; the graphics are pretty great and some of the visuals are entirely disturbing. Combined with the music and eerie sound effects, I was definitely on edge throughout the whole playthrough. That said, the game is almost entirely focused on having you solve puzzles, and that's where the mixed feelings come in.

I'm going to preface this section by saying I played the game with a friend who had a guide up and was feeding me answers. That said, for the most part, these puzzles felt so obtuse and unintuitive that, had I not played with him, I feel my playtime would have at least doubled, and not in a good way. Of course there is some logic in how these puzzles are operated, but others felt wholly arbitrary and even unsolveable if you didn't happen to have the right item on you at the time, which you'd have no way of knowing. Having my friend there to tell me what items to keep and which to store, (the whole inventory limit could've been omitted in my opinion), allowed me to solve the puzzles sequentially, but even with that, there were some puzzles where he was reading verbatim what I was meant to do and I still struggled to comprehend some of it. Some people might like the prospect of blindly running around the house searching for a missed item or piece to solve whichever random puzzle they faced, but with how many puzzles were present in the game and how obnoxious some of the solutions were, I think that it would've just detracted from any tension and fear that I was feeling.

With my major gripe out of the way, and entirely mitigated by my trusty companion, I'd like to reiterate that I did enjoy the game. The story begins with you thrust into the midst of a series of events that you get no background on, and the protagonist is no help, as they can't recall any of the events that led to your situation in the first place. Through the course of the game, you're almost working backwards to uncover what happened to your character through tapes, notes left by other characters, and pictures taken by a mysterious camera that you're given early on. As you start to put the pieces together, you get a clearer grasp of where the story is headed, and I think it works really well as a storytelling device to get you motivated in trying to get a step ahead of the titular Madison and avoid any gruesome fate.

Maybe I'm just a smooth-brained pepega, but I'd entirely recommend playing this game with a guide if horror games are your thing. I think the production value is high, the story is there, and it's a chilling game to experience, but if you're going through on your own and determined to solve the puzzles by your own merit, you're going to be met with more frustration and futility than fear and unease.
