S.C.A.T.: Special Cybernetic Attack Team (NES) Playthrough
A playthrough of Natsume's 1991 shooter for the NES, S.C.A.T: Special Cybernetic Attack Team.
Sometime in the near future, an alien armada has invaded Earth, and an "astrotube" (a space elevator, basically) now directly connects New York City to the bad guys' space station. The outlook is bleak, but the US president has an ace up his sleeve. Before the aliens arrived, he had ordered a team of scientists to create a weapon that would enable Earth to fight back.
That weapon was S.C.A.T., the Special Cybernetic Attack Team, comprised of a pair of cyborg warriors capable of wielding the aliens' technology against them. With all hope resting on the shoulders of Arnold and Sigourney, they now kick off Earth's last stand.
"You must destroy them. The Earth is counting on you!! Good luck."
S.C.A.T., known in Japan as "Final Mission" and in Europe as "Action in New York," is a shoot 'em up that borrows several ideas from Capcom's CPS1 classic, Forgotten Worlds. Playing as either Arnold or Sigourney (or both in 2P co-op) - both of whom come equipped with an upgradable forward-facing cannon and a pair of freely adjustable satellite guns - you have to blast your way through five stages to reach the orbiting space platform where the enemy commander awaits.
But really, that Natsume logo at the beginning tells you everything you need to know. Like Shatterhand and Shadow of the Ninja, SCAT is thoroughly excellent. The controls and the challenge are dialed in perfectly, the soundtrack (composed by Kiyohiro Sada, the guy who did Contra's music) is fantastic, and the ridiculous story and the characters are the cherry on top. This is Konami-grade NES gaming, here.
Notice how Arnold sports a blue tanktop and a single pauldron? That's cheese done right.
And, in a really nice touch, Arnold and Sigourney each have their own unique ending. You can see Arnold's ending at 30:59.
The name is unfortunate, but rest assured, SCAT is not shit.
