''Scott Pilgrim vs. The World'' is a 2010 comedy film starring Michael Cera and based on the series of graphic novels by Bryan Lee O'Malley. Cera stars as Scott Pilgrim, a twenty-something "geek" who lives in Toronto and plays in a local garage band. When Pilgrim meets Ramona Flowers, he's instantly smitten. Ramona seems like the girl of his dreams - but there's a catch. Pilgrim soon realizes that in order to maintain his budding relationship with Ramona, he'll have to do battle with seven of her "evil exes," including "vegan rock stars" and "infamous skateboarders." ''Scott Pilgrim vs. The World'' is directed by Edgar Wright of ''Hot Fuzz'' and ''Shaun of the Dead'' fame. It also stars Kieran Culkin, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Jason Schwartzman, Brandon Routh and Chris Evans.
Reviews for ''Scott Pilgrim'' were mixed to positive in the days leading up to the movie's release. ''Scott Pilgrim'' garnered an 80 percent rating on the Rotten Tomatoes "Tomatometer" on August 11. Critic Peter Debruge of ''Variety'' noted that while ''Scott Pilgrim'' was "an example of attention-deficit film making at both its finest and most frustrating," it would likely be embraced by the 20 and under crowd - particularly with Cera in the lead role. Kirk Honeycutt of ''The Hollywood Reporter'' called ''Scott Pilgrim'' a "discouragingly limp movie in which nothing is at stake."
Some critics seemed to genuinely like the film. Marshall Fine from Hollywood & Fine said ''Scott Pilgrim'' "feels like the first movie aimed squarely at the gamer generation." Pete Hammond of ''Boxoffice Magazine'' said ''Scott Pilgrim'' is "a blast," and "genuinely bright and hilarious." Hammond, like Debruge of ''Variety,'' maintains that "if you're under 25" you'll likely find ''Scott Pilgrim'' "really funny."
If you're young, enjoy gaming and love graphic novel adaptations, you're likely to enjoy the light comedy of ''Scott Pilgrim vs. The World.'' ''Scott Pilgrim'' hits U.S. theaters on August 13, 2010.
