Scribble [スクリブル] Game Sample - PC/Doujin
Now here is an unusual title. Being produced by the little-known group "Sketch Board", Scribble is a classic action platforming adventure game. It looks very classic, plays pretty well and sounds pretty good and possesses a light story to boot. It's such an all-around well-made game, one has to wonder why I'm only just hearing about it (and making a video for it) in 2011 when the game was done around 2005/2006...about half a decade ago. It had very little buzz and the main webpage has very few views for a site that has been around as long as it has...it's tragic that games like this fall through the cracks because no one really promotes them. Hell, as you're aware just by visiting our channel, many indie/doujin creators don't even make videos for their own work.
The game deals with a talented artist that goes by the name of Pen, an anthropomorphic dog of sorts. Pen has lived with his father and a couple of other people in a small house on the grassy Malachite Plains. One day, an obscure illness is discovered (which is causing people and things to lose their color) and to cure it, it is said that one must find a rainbow flower. With his father gone and unable to obtain the flower, Pen will go out across land and sea to find the rainbow flower himself while contending with armed soldiers, dragons, and more. The game has little bits of text that pop-up during the course of the game as well as displaying emotions with the use of emoticons. Pen will only communicate with emoticons (he's a silent protagonist).
The GUI is neat and organized and may make someone think of Kirby at a glance. If so, that's because the game is like an interesting alternative to Kirby. In order to fight your foes effectively, you won't be swallowing them. Nay, you will imitate their groovy powers with the pen (which is mightier than the sword, or so they say). You will draw an enemy on your sketch board and you will do this by staying within a certain proximity of your enemy and shadowing their movements until your drawing is complete. Once you've drawn an enemy once, they are much easier to sketch every time afterwards and part of the intrigue is trying to figure out different ways to easily draw certain enemies. Drawn enemies can level up in their powers as you gain special paint tubes...until you surpass the powers of said original. You can also add your favorites for missions for free by visiting your home in Malachite where you will see that you can gain the abilities of 40 different enemies. It's important to note that sketches have a limited number of uses, but they are useful in different ways and you can create combos with different powers.
The game has a number of stages (complete with multiple paths) and the enemies have a number of different characteristics. You can save your game on three different slots, change various options (controls, sound volume, etc.), and you can hold three special powers at a time to use for different situations. Really, the game is just very solid. The one thing that bothers me is that you have a recovery time for your basic brush attack. I can understand for the special attacks, but the standard attack is like your last line of defense. To be fair, it does stun most enemies. Anyway, you may be surprised to know that the game can still be downloaded for free on the main website at:

The download link is the sixth button on the very bottom (starting from the left). This is a video of the game in action. Enjoy.
UPDATE: The original website is gone, unfortunately...but I still have the free game! The link is below:
