Viewtiful Joe is a side-scrolling beat-em-up inspired by the same tokusatsu shows that gave rise to Power Rangers and Kamen Rider ("Henshina go-go, baby!"). Trapped in movie land, Joe must transform into his Viewtiful persona with the V-Watch from his favorite superhero Captain Blue in order to save his girlfriend Silvia from the Jadow. Joe fights his way through scenes styled after movies, drawing his special abilities based on common visual film effects.
This game was part of the Capcom 5, a pledge by Capcom to strengthen their erstwhile bond with Nintendo and help the flagging GameCube console. Nintendo was facing an uphill battle to recapture market share lost to Sony during the N64 era, including stalwart third parties like Capcom which had moved its popular franchises such as Mega Man to the PlayStation. In the end, only four of the five promised titles were produced, and all of them except P.N.03 were eventually ported to other consoles like the PS2. Viewtiful Joe may no longer be a console exclusive, but the original GameCube version is the one that we're going to play!
