59Want the scoop on Seasonal Lag? Ever wondered why August is warmer than June, and September is warmer than May, even though the sun is at the same exact angle in the sky for those months? Seasonal lag or as some people call it, "Lag of Seasons", is that the Earth's surface is cooler in the earlier summer months than the late summer months. The winter cools the Earth's surface, so less radiant heat is absorbed and retained in the atmosphere. As the earth's surface and atmosphere gradually warm up day after day during the summer, the ability for the earth to retain that heat going into the next day becomes easier for mother nature.
So, just like with the winter seasonal lag the winter solstice in December, January tends to be colder than November because of the reverse phenomenon.
