Secret Commando (Sega Master System, 1986) playthrough: Stage One: Lets blow shizz up!!
I was at a friends place this weekend for a Rambo movie marathon evening; all four Rambo movies, back to back (Rambo: First Blood Part 2 is my personal favorite). Anyway. I was inspired by that weekend to do a playthrough of this old school SMS console game which is apparently loosely (and I mean very "loosely"as evident by the game's final stage) based on the second Rambo movie.
From my research on the Internet, this game has an interesting history behind it (at least to me anyway). Released in 1986, this two player simultaneous overhead action shmup game was developed and published by Sega. Characters can shoot in five directions and are armed with a machine gun and explosive compound bow and arrow. Various power ups can be obtained through freeing hostages or defeating certain enemies and the power ups can grant extended machine gun firing range or increase the compound bow's power. What I found interesting, however, was the various different regional title names to this game.
In Japan, it was released under the name "Ashura", where you play as two gun wielding Buddhist monks (WTF LOL!) out to rescue their friends. In North America, it was titled "Rambo: First Blood Part II" with player one bearing resemblance to Sylvester Stallones movie character as well as some music from the movie added into the game.
However, the version that I will be playing is the European/Australasian version, which was released under the name "Secret Commando"in my part of the world where I live. Here, this version combined elements from the Japanese and North American versions, in terms of in-game music (largely from Ashura) and stage design (largely from the North America version).
Here, I playthrough Stage One.
