This is my remake of the timeless classic Secret of Evermore. This was the only Square game developed in North America, and it was never released in Japan. It shared some mechanics with Secret of Mana, but critics saw it as somewhat lesser than its Japanese counterparts because it wasn't over-the-top like they were. It has since grown into a cult classic, both because Secret of Mana is pretty successful, but also because of the music.
The game follows the protagonist and his shapeshifting dog as they are transported to the world of Evermore, which is made up of areas resembling time periods on Earth. From Prehistoric, to antiquity, to the middle ages, to the far future, they travel through these lands and defeat a variety of monsters in real time with sword, axe, spear, and bazooka with his constant companion, a dog whose form changes based on the area you're in. The dog, which you get to name, sniffs out the alchemical ingredients you need to "cast spells". Together, they go on great adventures and fight crazy bosses on their quest to get home.
The music is the cherry on top of one of the best RPGs on the SNES. This was the first soundtrack that now legendary Jeremy Soule ever did. He also claims to have been the one to come up with the name of the game when they decided to change it and held a name contest.
As far as I know, the only way to play this game is via a hard copy on a real SNES. The going rate for one at the time of publishing is around $45 USD for a loose cartridge. Complete in box is $133.
