September 2023 was the 20th anniversary contest for Dwelling of Duels, so there was no specific theme. I had a transcription of "Phantom and a Rose" that I wanted to make more interesting, so I mashed it up with a piano piece I heard as a kid called "The Darkening Sky." I always thought the tune and title sounded rather ominous, but in researching it for this mashup, I found out it's a lighthearted Taiwanese Hokkien children's/folk song called "天黑黑" ("Ti Oh Oh," or "Tian Hei Hei" in Mandarin). The lyrics are about a grandpa who finds a fish while digging for taro, and then while he and his wife argue about how to cook it, they accidentally break their cooking pot. ....So if you completely ignore the lyrics, I thought it would fit the mood of Pandora while it's under Thanatos's curse. 😅
