The Sega Saturn was released in Japan in 1994, and other countries in 1995. It was Sega's 5th generation home console. It's a CD based 32 bit system. It was known for its surprise launch for the US. in 1995 and for being difficult to develop for. The reason for these two things is because of one thing, the PlayStation.

The Saturn was originally supposed to be a 2D system. After Sega realized that 3D was the future after seeing the PlayStation's graphical capabilities, they added another processor. That's why it has two CPU's and many more processors. Compared to the PlayStation, it had much better 2D capabilities (probably the best out of the 5th generation). In 3D however, things weren't so good. Instead of using triangles for the polygons, it used quadrilaterals (squares). This made games look slightly worse than the PlayStation's. It was the opposite for Sony. The PlayStation couldn't do 2D graphics. Instead it emulated it. So overall the two systems are equal, Saturn has better 2D. PlayStation has better 3D. Vice versa for the weaknesses.

In the US, the Saturn was discontinued in 1998. In Japan, the Saturn lasted until 2001. The system was a failure for Sega. Because of Sega releasing the Saturn five months early, their past mistakes (CD and 32X), bad marketing, and Bernie Stolar, the Saturn failed to get traction here in the US. Europe was even worse. In Japan, the Saturn was quite popular. It actually was in second, beating the N64 in the making. Japan got most of the games. We got around 200. Japan had nearly all 700 games! Sadly most of those never came here. Bernie Stolar pretty much killed the system before it could do anything. This and all of their past mistakes carried over to the Dreamcast. Though they fixed nearly every problem that the Saturn had, the Dreamcast failed too. Sega left the console business in 2001 and became a third party developer. Now they aren't really doing that much. It's quite sad in my opinion.

Despite this, the Saturn has a great library of games. The only games it really lacks are RPG's. That's okay though. There are cheap games like Daytona USA, and there are very expensive games like Panzer Dragoon Saga. This is way more underrated than the Dreamcast. The Dreamcast isn't even that underrated anymore actually. There are two (there's a third one in Japan) different models. The one shown here is the model 1. The model 2 looks slightly different. You can easily tell them apart because of the buttons. The model 1's are ovals and the model 2's are round. The PlayStation may have had better third party titles, but the Saturn has many more and better first party ones in my opinion. The Saturn is a must have for any Sega or console collector. They aren't too expensive. Japanese consoles and games are much cheaper. All you have to do to play those on an American or any different region console is to buy an Action Replay. In my opinion, the Sega Saturn is a very great console.
