This is the Atari 2600..........Junior! While the original 2600 (known as the VCS [Video Computer System] at the time) was released in 1977, the Junior was released in 1984. While Atari made numerous consoles to replace the 2600, they didn't do as well. As a result of the 2600's success, it lasted until 1991. The 2600 is not, however, the first console or first console with programmable cartridges, Magnavox Odyssey and Fairchild Channel F respectively. The 2600 created and destroyed the gaming market. It and many others created what is known as the Video Game Crash of 1983.

The Junior was a cost reduced version of the 2600. It's much smaller and lighter. It has a body reminiscent of the Atari 5200 and 7800. Otherwise, it's practically the same as the other versions. If you want to mod this, remember that the Junior's plastic shell is very cheap and brittle. The 2600 is an 8-bit system. It may not look like it, but it technically is.

Many competitors have faced it. Some had better graphics. Some had new ideas. But nothing stopped the mighty 2600. Except the Video Game Crash of 1983. Many companies left the gaming industry at this time, but a few stayed, one of them was Atari. But the American gaming market was stale and needed something new and fresh. Something that had good rules in place. In 1985, this finally happened. Behold, the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). Atari started losing it's dominance. A once powerful gaming giant was soon starting to vanish. By 1991, the Atari 2600 was discontinued. In 1993, Atari made the Jaguar. This would be their last console. It was a failure and in 1996, it was discontinued. Atari was just a thing of the past. It was bought by Hasbro and Infogrames bought the right to the name Atari. Atari isn't the company that it once was. But the 2600 will always be in people's hearts.
