Been sitting on this one for a long time; I wanted to wait until TOME was finished before I tackled this particular subject. A question I got a while back from DarkWolfGavin asked for my thoughts on "self-insert" characters, in stories and my own work specifically. Those who've followed my animated works will know that I have a lot of characters based on real people, including several that're "modeled after" myself. However, the idea of characters being a self-insertion for authors can be a slippery slope that leads to self-indulgence. Drawing from personal experiences is an important resource for storytelling, and everyone in life is "the main character of their own story"...but where do you draw the line? This week I go into the details of my thoughts on this, going back many years. Hope it's informative and might shed some light on what to think of in the future!
