Serious Sam: The First Encounter is a first-person shooter developed by Croteam and released on Microsoft Windows in 2001, than later ported to the Xbox 360, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One consoles. The gameplay has the player defeat hosts of enemies in wide open areas with weapons that get increasingly more powerful, health and armor are non-regenerative on all difficulty levels except for the easiest and instead are replenished with health and armor packs which can be found throughout the levels. The game also has a cooperative gameplay through a split-screen mode and via the internet.
Although Serious Sam: The First Encounter was followed by several other iterations and spin-offs that form a proper franchise, it was originally developed by Croteam as a demo for their engine, so in some countries the initial release was priced at less than half the price of comparable games in the genre.
