Serious Sunday: RIP Lionhead & Two Tribes - More studios lost to new business models
Luke takes a moment to reflect on a trend of market evolution in game development that has unfortunately left a lot of game studios to fall apart in their wake. Unfortunately, even though the digital revolution in game distribution has greatly helped usher in new types of game development, far less beholden to the retailers and publishers of yesteryear, it has also spearheaded the creation of the "Games as a Service" model that now stumps many traditional developers, and has lead to the closing of some great long-term studios like Lionhead and Two Tribes.
Serious Sunday is a freeform roundtable discussion between the members of the Level 0 NPCs, where a specific topic is pre-selected by the group to be explored and discussed at length. Each of the NPCs approach the topic from both the perspective of a seasoned, die-hard gamer, and as creators of games themselves. Part freeform review, part critical analysis, part video game book club, Serious Sunday is where the NPCs take a step back and take a moment to give a serious look at something that is important to the industry, or games in general.
