Psygnosis certainly had the pedigree to make good games. In fact the Commodore Amiga version of Shadow of the Beat seems to have been quite well received for its playability and impressive parallax scrolling. Unfortunately though when porting it to home consoles (the Mega Drive and TurboGrafx-16 among others) a lot seems to have been lost in translation. I found the game misleading right from the opening area, and then felt like the enemies spawned in a way that gave you virtually no time to react to their attacks, and if it weren't for the music and some decent visuals I would have put this one down as a horrible mess. It's not unplayable but it's probably best played in an emulator using save states. Subscribe to Mistah MegaManFan for new content daily!
