Shadow of the Beast was initially announced during Gamescom 2013 as a PS4 exclusive. The first trailer was revealed, among with the announcement of Heavy Spectrum Entertainment Labs as developer. On April 2014, developer CEO, Matt Birch said "The music, the art, they were really important to us, and we wanted to make sure we don't disappoint people."
Sony officially announced the first gameplay video during Electronic Entertainment Expo 2015. The release date was originally set as March 2nd 2016, but was delayed to 17 May 2016.
