Shadow the Hedgehog Longplay (Enhanced by THX Spatial Audio)
Shadow the Hedgehog is a 2005 platformer developed by Sonic Team (back then known as Sega Studios USA) and published by Sega. Starring Sonic's fan-favourite rival from the game Sonic Adventure 2, the game became highly controversial due to its depiction of cartoon characters wielding realistic weapons and shouting minor curse words. Its story focuses on Shadow, suffering from amnesia, being persuaded by an enigmatic being known as Black Doom in learning about his past. In his hunt for the Chaos Emeralds, the player can decide his allegiance. Would he side with Black Doom to take over Earth and bring judgement to the humans? Would he go solo and gather the answer of his past himself? Or would he join forces with Sonic and the gang to save Earth from Black Doom?
The game was released to a mixed to negative reaction from critics and audiences alike, with many calling the overall concept absurd and even going so far as saying that Sega jumped the shark with the game. The controls, characterization, tone and missions were heavily criticized, although the replay value were given some praises. Retrospective review of the game blamed it for being the beginning of the "Dark Ages" of the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, which still continues to this day.
