This is a typical command-selection adventure game in which you progress through the adventure by selecting appropriate commands and directing the protagonist's actions. It also incorporates horror game elements, as players explore a spooky and terrifying castle.
The player takes on the role of a hero of royal blood, and embarks on an adventure to defeat the demon king Warlock, hiding in Shadowgate Castle, to save the world. The story unfolds in a medieval European fantasy world dominated by swords and magic, a style often seen in Japanese RPGs.
The Family Computer version was released in Japan by Kemco (Kotobuki System Co., Ltd.) on March 31, 1989.
