It's a typical command-selection adventure game in which you advance through the adventure by selecting the appropriate command and making the hero take action, and it also contains elements of a horror game, as you explore a creepy and terrifying castle.
The player becomes a hero of royal blood, and adventures in the castle of Shadowgate, where Warlock is hiding, to defeat the demon king and save the world. The story unfolds in a medieval European fantasy world dominated by swords and magic, which is often seen in Japanese RPGs.
In Japan, the Family Computer version was released by Kemco (Kotobuki System Co., Ltd.) on March 31, 1989.
