Yep, I was right! This game borrows the Cockatrice from Altered Beast and turns it into a mount! This game came out one year after Altered Beast.

Anywho. Since Altered Beast was under ten minutes, here's a second video for your pleasure.

I may do more of these arcade games where I simply play as far as my lives/continues will take me, then stop when I run out. Why not, right?

Golden Axe takes place in the land of Yuria, where the evil entity Death Adder has taken the King and Princess hostage. He also has the magical artifact known as The Golden Axe. He threatenes to destroy both the family and the artifact unless the people of Yuria accept him as his ruler.

Why that's a fail-proof plan, I've no idea.

Anywho, you get to play as one of three characters:

Gilius Thunderhead, an axe-bearing lightning-wielding dwarf. His twin brother was killed by Death Adder's soldiers.

Ax Battler, a broadsword-wielding human who casts earth magic. His mother was murdered presumably by Death Adder or his soldiers. The handbook doesn't say.

Tyris Flare is an Amazonian with a longsword and fire magic. Her parents were killed by Death Adder.

So unless Alex is actually Gilius's brother, there's some inconsistency going on here. All I know is that this is your classic revenge story.
