Holmes returns to his home, where he learns Alice disregarded his earlier command to end Kate's piano lessons. He steals and reads Alice's mail, which indicates she moved to Baker Street, just to be close to him. He tries to confront Alice, but she blackmails him over the fact that he hasn't told Kate the truth about her father.

Holmes disguises himself as a doctor. He and Watson visit a patient with a tropical disease. Holmes recognizes him as Mr. Albeit, but Mr. Albeit is not at all willing to speak to him.
