~ * ~ about the song and stuff ~ * ~
The SMT V soundtrack recently got released on streaming services, so I thought I'd make some more covers! This track has always stood out to me, it has a really nice and chilled-out vibe for a battle theme.
There's a lot of fun production stuff going on, so I'll divide it up into sections.
SYNTHS:
I got that synth sound in the intro by running Alicia's Keys (a piano library) into Archetype: Gojira's pitch shifter. I love the way piano sounds through that plugin. Also, that synth that sounds like vocals.... is actually just me singing, nothing else really haha. I just didn't know how to put it on camera, so I played it on synth for the video.
The synth bass sound in the "chorus" section is a mix between the Xpand!2 'Soft Finger Bass' patch and the 'Monster Pick Bass' patch in Alchemy. I like how the Xpand bass has a solid low-end/low-mid response and the Alchemy patch adds some transients akin to palm-muted bass/guitar.
It's also worth noting I actually ended up recording a lot of the synth parts. I usually don't, but I wanted to try and emulated the off-kilter, unquantized feel of the original.
I hope no one's upset I completely left out all of the woodwind stuff. I like it, I just didn't know how to include it in my version.
DRUMS:
The original has drums that are pretty compressed/lo-fi, so I wanted to lean into that and maybe take it a little farther. I used GGD Modern and Massive, 'Default Kit, Raw' patch with the Pearl kick and Gretch Bell Brass snare. I wanted to make the hi-hat more direct, so I turned it way down in the overheads/rooms and turned up the hat close mic.
Here's the signal chain for the drums:
Logic compressor (Studio FET, about -5db to -8 db, soft clipping)
Console EQ (Smooth output model, 7.8 dB drive)
Bitcrusher (Fold mode, 29.5 dB drive, 10 bit resolution, 3x downsample, 18.5 mix)
A couple channel EQ's to control the high-end and do filter sweeps.
I made the Lo-fi drum loop in the beginning using a groove I wrote with GGD. I don't remember exactly what I did, but I boosted the low-end a lot and put at least 3 or 4 different distortions on it. Low-passed it, chopped it up, idk. I think it sounds pretty close to the original, which is cool!
GUITAR:
For the rhythm guitars at the end, I used Archetype: Nolly (3rd amp, 3rd cab, 57 mic) with the gain set pretty low. I played the parts on the neck pickup, which along with the low gain gave it a nice classic prog sound. I want to get away from feeling like I was always have to use HIGH GAIN BRIDGE PICKUP TONES WITH OVERDRIVE THAT'S REALLY IN YOUR FACE all the time, ya know?
VIDEO:
I've been inspired to change up my videos a bit, so I decided to just use my 15-45mm lens for this video. As much as I like my 30mm prime lens, it can be pretty limiting. The picture is noisier and less crisp with the 15-45, but it's also much easier to quickly set up a shot and start recording. I'd like to go back to recording a lot of my parts live (specifically the synths) and I think shooting video this way will help.
Maybe I just need to get a 15 or 20mm prime lens tho haha.
