Here we have it, the "first" "real" boss of the game. I say that, but you can actually skip Stormveil Castle entirely if you want.

However, Margit plays a fairly big part in the story overall, and is usually the first cutscene boss players face. He's like Asylum Demon, Lost Giant, Cleric Beast, and Iudex Gundyr.

Only, Margit is way harder than any of the other beginning bosses in previous games. Don't let this performance fool you. I wanted to really learn how Margit ticked, so I fought him other times.

There are multiple opening attacks where he can go into his fast dagger swipe followed by a jump back and dagger throw. Some of these attacks, like the fast upward swing, would normally be perceived as an opening, but since he can go into that fast dagger swipe immediately after, this is not an opening because you can be punished for attacking during it.

When he does any overhead hammer swing (be it mid-air or on the ground), there is a chance he can go into a fast dagger swing out of it. This is not a true opening, but you can try to mitigate this by getting as close to his rear as possible when you roll it.

In fact, he can go into his fast dagger out of a lot of attacks, meaning none of them are true actual openings. Attacking during them is always a coin flip, and a coin flip cannot be learned.

When Margit does his jump hover into ground stab, you can roll to get behind him into an R1 or L1, and then get away with a leaping attack.

If he holds his weapon over his head and walks towards you, you can stay relatively behind him, following him, and attack his rear.

When he does his overhead spring-loaded attack, this is the best time to parry him. Standing in front to parry anything else runs the risk of you taking a holy dagger to the face, since they can come out so fast you need to twitch roll them.

If he lifts his cane to do this spring-loaded attack, backing away will have him chase you and instead do a 2-combo attack on you. This is safe to punish. usually you will wind up being behind him when you do punish. He'll try a tail swipe in response, which is also safe to punish after.

If he does his slightly delayed dagger into dagger into cane stab, you do have a risk of rolling the first attack perfectly and getting roll caught by the second attack due to its timing. You either want to be more on his left when he does this, or already have some distance. I avoided the followup two attacks when I really shouldn't have.

Simply because he can go into that holy dagger at nearly any point, none of those instances are true openings, making engaging with them a gamble that's removed from skill if you choose to engage with those attacks.

Again, I did the fight no-hit. Parried that spring-loaded delayed overhead twice to finish him. Wouldn't consider him well designed or exactly fun or intuitive to learn. Especially when his cane jab into the ground (where he jabs it forward at you) that has a lot of recovery, has no recovery if you try to heal during that opening. He will immediately throw a holy dagger at you, which you can't outpace. It's the game telling you you cannot heal or use a flask of any kind.

Not that I haven't gotten away with it, since it's not consistent. It's RNG, though he will usually do it. You can be behind him and he won't. Just the fact that you can't reliably heal during concrete openings at all is lazy design.

I like Margit as a character. He's very deep and tragic, but his fights are akin to Dark Souls 2 BS.
