The Matsuda clan, having lost a majority of it's armies attempted no real form of counter attack but it's land was not a target of just the Chosokabe. Near to the centre of the country stood the clan of the Saito. This clan which had earned high prestige from defeating a rebel uprising in Kyoto and restoring the current shoganate. Now they saw to capitalize on the opportunity for more land, honour and revenue for their clan.
