Shogun: Total War is a turn-based strategy and real-time tactics video game developed by The Creative Assembly and published first by Electronic Arts for Windows PCs in 2000, then by SEGA.
Shogun debuted The Creative Assembly's Total War series. Steam added the Total War: Shogun Collection including the Mongol Invasion DLC in 2015 in an updated build for modern PCs. Shogun: Total War was not ESRB rated although Total War: Shogun 2 is ESRB Rated T.

Set in Japan during Sengoku Jidai — the "Warring States" period from the 15th to the early 17th century. Play as leader of a Japanese clan, attempting to conquer the nation and claim the position of shōgun.
Turn-based, the game focuses on a map of Japan where military force, religion, diplomacy, espionage and economics all influence the player's actions. Battles are fought in a 3D real-time mode. Sun Tzu's The Art of War is central to the game; its precepts quoted often and its strategies recommended.
Shogun: Total War was The Creative Assembly's first high business risk product announced in 1999. The rise of 3D video cards led the devs to use 3D graphics. Game play evolved to real-time tactics focussed on historical authenticity. Military historian Stephen Turnbull advised The Creative Assembly. The turn-based campaign map was added as context for the real-time battles.
