Should Black Ops 2 Have Trueskill Matchmaking?
First of all, the people who say Black Ops 2 is going to have trueskill matchmaking don't understand what the trueskil ranking system is. BO2 won't have a trueskill matchmaking system because the trueskill ranking system is copyrighted by Microsoft. Because Trueskill is trademarked by Microsoft the only games that can use it are Xbox exclusives like Halo 3 and Gears of War 2. Halo Reach used trueskill as well but Bungie did away with visible ranks based on trueskill. BO2 though will be on PS3 and PC as well and Microsoft would never allow the PS3 to use their ranking system.
What BO2 will use though is a skill-based ranking system to match players according to their skill rather than their lowest ping. We don't know yet if this will be across all playlists or limited to just a few but if Treyarch paid any attention to how the trueskill system was abused in Halo 3 they should want nothing to do with a skill-based matchmaking system. I have over 7000 exp. in Halo 3 and I've lost hundreds of games on all my different accounts because of derankers so I have a much better grasp of the implications of this kind of matchmaking system than Treyarch does.
Matching players according to their skill level is an absolutely terrible idea for several reasons and I'm going to give you a few of them right off the top of my head.
Number one, matching players by their skill level will encourage people to create new accounts so that way they can play against bad players. Matching players based on skill will become pointless because a large portion of the good players who want to get good scores and gameplays for Youtube will just create new accounts so that way they can just play against bad players to get a high K/D, win/loss and YouTube money.
Number two, people who don't care about their win/loss ratio will intentionally lose or quit out of games to derank their skill level so that way they can play against bad players. There will be an epidemic of quitting and people going afk or intentionally letting the other team kill them so they can lose.
Number three, players will intentionally lose as a way to grief and troll their teammates since ranking up depends on winning. Imagine all the trolling videos people will make for YouTube of themselves intentionally losing to get an angry reaction from their teammates. If you don't believe me, go watch some old FAG videos on YouTube.
Number four, it will create a market for accounts with the highest rank. Because not everyone is good enough to reach the highest rank, people will buy and sell accounts so they can brag that they are better than others at the game.
Number five, it will promote boosting where players will have their friends join the other team on their dying accounts and kill them over and over again so they can win every game.
Number six, it will create another market for players who want to rank up paying good players to play with them so they can rank up. The same thing happens in Halo 3 today where people play with booster accounts to level up to 50.
Number seven, it will promote network manipulation. When one team is losing they will just cheat using DDOS attacks to make the other team lag out so they can win. Look at all the cheating that took place during the Halo 2 days and in Halo 3 today at high level matchmaking. It could also promote dashboarding and quitting even more than the current system does.
Number eight, because very few players will be good enough or have a team that is good enough to reach the highest rank, casual players will become disinterested in matchmaking because they will be stuck at their low ranks. This will be bad for the good players because it will make it harder for them to find lobbies full of bad players since now the bad players find MW3 more fun because all the good players are playing BO2 now. This will promote even more quitting to find "magical" lobbies full of bad players for YouTube.
If Treyarch is going to use a skill-based ranking system they have to have an in-game reporting system to ban all of the derankers, cheaters, boosters, network manipulators, afkers, account buyers, and quiters that are going to try to ruin the game for the rest of us who want to play legit. An in-game rank based on your actual skill is a great idea but because not everyone is good enough to get to the highest rank it will promote cheating that will ruin the game for everyone else. If you don't believe me, try playing Halo 3 ranked matchmaking and see how long it takes to find a game full of derankers so they can boost people to 50 -- especially in MLG, Swat, and Doubles. Those who ignore the past are doomed to repeat it and that's what Treyarch is doing here.
