SHOULD YOU BUY FIRE EMBLEM ECHOES? (WON'T BE WAIFU EMBLEM 3) + Features and Trailer Analysis
3,081In today's episode we're taking a look at the recently announced Fire Emblem Echoes - Shadows of Valentia. This upcoming Fire Emblem title for the Nintendo 3DS will be a remake of 1992's Fire Emblem Gaiden for the Nintendo Entertainment System. The first trailer for the game has quite a few easter eggs and little details for us to breakdown and analyze, and I discuss what happened with the last Fire Emblem remake to hit the west; Fire Emblem Shadow Dragon. If you are new to the Fire Emblem series and started with games like Fire Emblem Awakening or Fire Emblem Fates, be prepared that many features might be missing and or different since this game is a remake of the second ever Fire Emblem game. While I'm sure Nintendo will modernize it and add in features we know and love like support conversations, with 2009's Fire Emblem Shadow Dragon there were still many modern features missing from the game in an effort to keep it true to the original. For example, in Shadow Dragon, pushing, shoving, and rescuing units were not features. Support conversations also did not exist in that game. If you are fond of Fire Emblem because of the Marriage and "Waifu" elements present in Awakening and Fates or the My Unit / Avatar character being a part of the game, I will warn you that these features may not be present in this Fire Emblem release, however there is no way to know 100% just yet. Judging by Nintendo's past choices with remakes, it is likely that this game will not be Waifu Emblem 3. Though it would be interesting, I do not think Nintendo will create a whole new cast of children characters for this release.
In the trailer, we can see that the overworld map from the original Gaiden, Sacred Stones, and Awakening will be returning. There will also be a new pseudo 3D village exploration and dungeon crawling aspect of the game, similar to the Tales series. attacking enemy monsters in these dungeons initiates combat with them and they will begin the battle with a bit of hp loss. The world map calendar date mentions that it is the season of the pegasus, so this game may feature different gameplay events in different months or a time limit to complete the story. There is also a mysterious new villager named Effie (no, not Effie from Fire Emblem Fates). Promotion will occur at the shrines found scattered across the world in the original Gaiden, and the branched promotion system will be returning. When Alm attacks we are shown that there is a new menu item called, "Food," signifying that there may be a new system for cooking meals for temporary stat boosts or hp restoration. We can also see a cut in of a nearby character, echoing that support bonuses and potentially support conversations will be returning. We can also see that "Defense" is now displayed in the battle forecast and will need to be manually calculated. Archers (like in Gaiden) can now attack in close combat unlike the archers of previous games in the series.
Should you buy Fire Emblem Echoes - Shadows of Valentia? If you enjoyed the tactical rpg aspects of the Fire Emblem series and the quirky characters, this game may be for you. If you are expecting this to be another installment of the "Waifu Emblem" series, there is (thus far) no confirmation of those features returning.
