Should You Play Final Fantasy XIV Right Now in 2022?
13Final Fantasy 14 is, to me, proof that with the right leadership, and a little bit of luck, anything is possible. What do I mean by this? Well, the story behind how FF14 came to be is a really interesting one. Other youtubers have covered how this game had an incredibly rocky development cycle, but let me just give a quick recap as to how it all went down.
And just in case you want a quick TL;DR, Final Fantasy 14 is an amazing game in 2022, but I think it’s important you know how this came to be.
Final Fantasy 14, the original version that is, was released in 2010. By all means it should have been a huge success right then and there. After all, Final Fantasy is probably THE most well-known RPG franchise to have ever existed, with all games in the series featuring huge worlds, rich stories and amazing music. Square Enix, the company behind all modern Final Fantasy titles had already experienced success in the MMO space when they developed and released Final Fantasy 11, so it’s not like they were starting out completely from scratch.
In case you aren’t familiar with this game series, Final Fantasy 11 and 14 were the only Final Fantasy games that were subscription-based MMORPGs, all other mainline Final Fantasy titles were strictly single-player RPGs. FF11 was developed for the Playstation 2 in 2002, and it was a pretty big success for its time. When it came time to create a new MMO experience for systems other than the PS2, Square Enix decided to hire a majority of the same people who worked on FF11 to work on FF14. Surely if they could make a good MMO once they could do it again, right?
