These old-school shooters include Blood, which was full of pop-culture in-jokes, horror movie references, and had some fantastically macabre weaponry, including a potent aerosol flamethrower, a skull on a stick and a creepy voodoo doll.
There's also Lucasarts’ 1997 wild west shooter Outlaws, which followed the exploits of a retired US Marshal out for revenge on the bandit gang who killed his wife and kidnapped his daughter.
What Outlaws did particularly well was capturing the essence of a hard-boiled spaghetti western, between the cutscenes, with their hand-drawn animation style and the excellent score, and the hero himself: a sort of ultra-violent Abraham Lincoln. Four score and seven bullets ago, bandits.
