[Synopsis]

This was the fourth game from the Sid Meier's Civilization series which started in 1991 with Sid Meier's Civilization. I got this game in 2005 at Fry's Electronics, I have the original box, manual, and media for this game. The game contained three CD-ROMs, and a DVD-ROM for video clips related to Sid Meier and the Civilization series.

I tried to install this game on my modern computer with Windows 11 Pro on it, but I couldn't get the game to run on Windows 11. As a result, I ran this game on my old Pentium IV 3.0 HT based computer using a digital camera.

The interface for Civ IV is very much like the previous 4 games in that you can stack units. There are added features which weren't in the previous games, like military unit combat upgrades. Civ 4 also uses 3d polygonal graphics which the previous three games did not have. Other than that, all the key commands for controlling units is pretty much the same, and you can view cities. The palace add on feature is gone in this game, and you need to have strategic resources to build certain units, like in Civilization 3. For example, you need aluminum and oil to produce modern battle tanks, you need oil to produce aircraft and tanks. You need coal to build coal powered power plants, you need uranium to build nuclear power plants, etc. You don't need units of strategic resources to support units, like in Civilization V, all you have to have is the resource, and you can produce as many units as you want.

Some other features were abandoned from the previous versions of the Civilization franchise, like caravans to conduct trade. You just need a system of roads, ports, and rails connecting cities to be able to conduct trade, and that is more realistic. Only the infrastructure is needed to facilitate commerce. This idea was further expanded in Civilization V and Civilization VI.

The system requirements for this game was a Athlon XP or Pentium IV based computer with at 512 MB of ram or more. On my Pentium IV, I had 512 MB using a Geforce 6800 GT 256 MB graphics card. It was more than enough to run this game.

Out of all the Civilization series that I played from Civilization (1991) to Civilization VI (2016), I thought his version was very good.
