I may try this again with a different strategy, but I allowed myself to throw the gun onto the balcony (instead of gun in hand until targets are dead) for a few reasons:

1.) Richard is not easily manipulated. Even when he flees, he probably wouldn't end up in a place he could be killed easily without being seen, or having his body found.

2.) Getting the shotgun to the balcony or any of the adjacent ones without being seen is not very practical.

3.) For this route, waiting to snipe with a shotgun from the catwalk is pretty silly. Especially when the game's aiming mechanics are horrible. Not only would I have to rely on the shitty accuracy, but I would have to keep the guards away, and still exit the building after he dies.

4.) I think finding a setup and location from which to throw the gun was a lot more interesting than any of the options above.
