A game that commits all the cardinal sins in the book. An escort mission, backtracking, repeated levels, unkillable enemies, confusing progression, limited inventory, beginner traps, important mechanics that go unexplained, mechanics changing abruptly mid-game with no warning... But maybe it all means something.

Silent Hill 4 is a game about depression and love, with the theme of dreams. People try to reach out to help but they can't (Eileen and Frank at Henry's door). You cry out for help but that also doesn't work. You are birthed into a world that is scary and foreboding, meeting people with questionable motives. The monsters reflect this as well, resembling warped bugs, dogs, and people... All common fears. Walter was unloved growing up, and he and other's paid the ultimate price for it. Henry was a shut-in who couldn't open up. It's a game about anxiety. It's a game about a man needing to overcome his shut-in, depressing lifestyle, or die. You go through all the dungeons twice to symbolize the repitition of life. The game takes a steep difficulty curve after Hospital World, symbolizing being born into a world that is unfair. The people who met previously are now hostile. When you beat Silent Hill 4, you beat depression. It's the most beautiful game ever made in my opinion.
