Silent Hill - The Short Message
0It's unclear what the short message is. Tech demo, or an afterthought whilst trying to drum up interest in the franchise revival of Silent Hill? Let's face it, after the cancellation of PT/Silent Hills, nobody has really given a shit about the dormant franchise which hasn't had a high point main release since The Room. Well, the first thing that I will say on The Short Message is that it is very important to remember that its a 2-3 hour romp that is absolutely free to play. But how long should the fact that you don't pay to play remain an excuse?
You play as the unreliable narrator, Anita. She is a student who lives and studies in the fictional German town of Kettenstadt, and she has been invited to the Villa - a buiilding that serves as both a hotspot for graffiti artists and teen suicides. The reason? She's been invited by her friend Maya - and it is soon revealed that Maya ended her own life 6 months ago - and what follows is her reliving her past in an effort to understand and atone for her actions by exploring her past in the dingy and dark complex that shifts between present, past areas and mazes where you're chased by a cherry blossom monster. Unfortunately, your character who is motivated by others opinions, social media likes and follows and being genuinely shallow. I had no connection to the annoying "protagonist" that I was controlling. I just did not care.
Imagine Hideo Kojima's PT demo if the dread and terror was replaced by boredom and annoyance. The mazes are more frustrating than scary, as the monster pursues you - picture Pac Man with WWE Hell in A Cell backgrounds. And perhaps worst of all, is that despite trigger warnings and support links that would genuinely be helpful to someone in this situation, it handles mental illness and suicide like a tawdry and cheap plot device. What I didn't pay for the game, I made up in time.
