Back in 1996, long before his Red Rocket renaissance, Simon Rex found himself in one of the most uncomfortable moments of his career — interviewing Tupac Shakur live on MTV while totally stoned.

The surreal moment unfolded after Rex had just finished working an event for MTV. According to him, a producer suggested they wind down with some weed. All seemed chill until, out of nowhere, Tupac arrived. “All of a sudden, Tupac shows up, and they're like, ‘You have to interview him,’” Rex recalled. “I said, ‘I’m too stoned.’ And they go, ‘Don’t worry. So is he.’”

Before he knew it, cameras were rolling live. Rex, visibly out of his depth, relied on Tupac to carry the interview — and thankfully, the rap legend did just that. “I was just looking at the floor,” Rex admitted. “It’s horrible to watch.”

In a short clip from the interview, Tupac used the moment not to clown Rex, but to address the ongoing East Coast vs. West Coast narrative, calling for unity and focus. “Squash the drama. Let’s get back to making some money,” he said, standing alongside fellow artists like Buckshot, Greg Nice, and members of the Boot Camp Clik. “I don’t got any problems with anybody.”

Despite the haze, the moment ended up being both hilarious and heartfelt — a chaotic mashup of awkward stoner energy and Tupac’s genuine call for peace.

For Simon Rex, it was a moment of panic. For the rest of us, it’s another bizarre gem from MTV’s golden age.
