We're off to Solitude to chase up on our only lead on the shadowy figure who's trying to take the Thieves Guild down. Gulum-Ei has been patiently sitting in The Winking Skeever since we first visited Solitude ages ago, but now we can finally interact with him. After a little persuasion he admits he handled the sale of Goldenglow, but says he doesn't know who the buyer is.

We suspect he's lying, so our next objective is to tail him and try to find out more. I like this part, as it requires actual stealth. Of course we double-stack things in our favor by using Invisibility as well. We follow him to the East Empire Company Warehouse, and inside he makes a circuit of the premises before disappearing through a door into Brinewater Grotto. Before following him, we are honor-bound as a thief to relieve the warehouse of all valuables, which takes the lion's share of the time here. After acquiring all the goods, including a shipping map for Delvin Mallory, we then follow into the Grotto.

In the warehouse we upheld our Way of the Thief is not attacking any of the guards, as they are just innocent bystanders in all of this, but Brinewater Grotto is full of just run of the mill bandits, and they get no such consideration. Besides, our blades are thirsty for some action, so we take out guards from the shadows left and right until the area has been pacified. The lone exception is a dog found in a side passage. While he technically is hostile and would attack us if we were detected, we're not going to kill a dog just for the sake of it. We may be a thieving, murdering, Daedra-worshipping Vampire Lord, but we're not a monster.

With his conspirators dead, Gulum-Ei suddenly has a much better memory, and tells us the buyer was Karliah - a thief he claims was responsible for killing the previous Guildmaster. He also leaves us a clue as to where she might be now. We need to take all this info back to Mercer, but for now we head back to Whiterun for a desperately needed sort n' sell, as going solo is murder on our inventory. Next time we're back to Riften to pick up the next quest, Speaking with Silence.
