Another day, another awesome shooter for the mighty Mega Drive/Genesis. So this one is pretty cool--Slap Fight MD *Special* is an ENTIRELY DIFFRENT GAME from vanilla Slap Fight that you access through the menu. How crazy is that? I feel like I never checked menus in video games growing up. It's easy to miss.

Toaplan did a great job with this one. I find it's a little more balanced than the original game because you can't just use over powered homing missiles the whole time...at least I didn't find them practical. Instead, I pretty much use the vanilla Shot for the whole game. You can also use the C button to blow up an extra Wing, thus making your ship smaller too. Your default ship is one Wing and I found this to be fine for the game...the added Wings give you power but make your ship too fat vertically for the tight dodging in the latter half of the game.

This is definitely a "shooting game" more so than a bullet hell style "dodging game." Your shot, like in the first game and Tiger Heli, does not extend across the entire screen which forces you to get up close and be aggressive. This works well since you can get insanely fast...like as fast as you want....it's AWESOME and super fun. I think more shooters should explore this shot type option.

Not much more to say, really. It's a quick loop so even though the dodging can be a bit tricky at times it doesn't take too long to get a feel for it. Again, I truly love how fast-paced and balls-to-the-walls this game is. For people who don't like slower style console shmups and prefer arcade style, I'd say give this one a chance. It's quite unique in the Genesis library and it definitely deserves some love.

Also I rage quit realllllly early in loop 2 lol. Maybe next time.
