Sling TV on the Xbox One Review
The idea of Sling TV is a solid one. You basically take the established idea of streaming media and add in the live TV element that is missing from Hulu Plus and Netflix. The problem is that you're seemingly paying a premium within that $20 a month for the privilege of being obligated to watch a show at a certain time.
Beyond that, you're also paying for the bandwidth to get the signal, and if your ISP has a restriction, you can wind up going over or incurring a bit of wrath on their behalf. The channel selection is incredibly lean, but the video quality is largely good.
Buffering is an issue, but thanks to it being live, that can be worked out during a commercial break if you're lucky. As a wrestling fan, I love the idea of this setup for live HD viewing of Lucha Underground, but since I can get that show in HD on demand via Comcast, it's really not a solid value or an expense I can justify.
While it has ABC Family and Disney Channel, I wouldn't recommend it as a babysitter because of the other content on the channels. A far better option is to plop a kid in front of the Amazon Instant or Netflix Kids areas and just have them go through those. It's a far cheaper option, and in the case of Amazon Instant, you're also getting a prime sub that can pay for itself just in gasoline savings for short trips if you're just getting items you don't have an immediate need for.
$20 a month is simply too much for what this offers up, and both Hulu Plus and Netflix are far better streaming options for cord cutters. If you are one, you're likely used to not watching stuff live, and it's a great way to watch TV and not be a slave to it at the same time.
Still, I'm glad the app is available on a console finally. The Xbox One's wi-fi is superb, although I do prefer to have things hard-wired whenever possible. Channel-wise, I would love it if it had AXS TV just to be able to get a channel I want, but don't receive on my cable package.
It's also odd that ESPN and ESPN 2 are included, but not ESPN Classics. As a wrestling fan, just the inclusion of those two stations would net me access to New Japan Pro Wrestling, the AWA (on occasion), the Herb Abrams version of the UWF, and the GWF.
With all that said, it's worth trying for free. On the Xbox One, and I think other devices, you can get a whole month for free. On PC, you only get a week - so that's a huge difference and really something they should even out because it really comes off as a screw you to PC-only users.
