Launched in December 1941, the Battleship Yamato was the largest battleship in the world. However, she and her sister ship Musashi were already obsolete in the new age of the aircraft carrier. A third ship, the Shinano, was converted into an aircraft carrier and was quickly sunk in November 1944.

The battleship Yamato served as the inspiration for the core ship and its series Space Battleship Yamato. In the revamped series, the Yamato is now joined by a sister ship called the Ginga.
