I was finally able to crack open the file format Mario Sunshine uses to make Shadow Mario (and Piantissimo) walk so I created a test file that makes Shadow Mario walk in a simple way.

The nature of the file format (.pad) makes it difficult to create custom paths because the file contains sequences of gamepad inputs that the game plays back with each frame. (Think of something like "Hold analog stick in this direction for X frames")
At the end of the video my custom input sequences ended and Mario was close enough to a trigger that started a different sequence that I did not modify, so he snapped to the start of that trigger and ran away as usual.

I want to convert Dolphin's dtm files to pad to make creation of custom pad files easier but that requires either fixing Mario's camera at a specific angle or making his movement independent from the camera's direction.
