Snake's Revenge (NES) Playthrough
Playthrough of Ultra's 1990 action game for the NES, Snake's Revenge.
Snake's Revenge for the NES is a side-scrolling action-adventure game and a follow-up to the original Metal Gear, though it's not considered part of the official Metal Gear series canon by its creator, Hideo Kojima. Released in 1990, the game places players in the role of Solid Snake, a special forces operative on a mission to stop a nuclear threat. The gameplay blends combat, stealth, and exploration as players navigate military installations, forests, and enemy bases, battling both soldiers and environmental hazards along the way.
The game features a mix of side-scrolling and top-down perspectives, with Snake primarily moving through enemy territory, sneaking past guards, and engaging in direct combat when necessary. In many areas, players are encouraged to take a stealthy approach, avoiding detection by patrolling guards and security systems. The game offers a variety of weapons, including firearms, grenades, and knives, allowing players to approach encounters in different ways depending on the situation. However, careful ammo management and strategic use of supplies are crucial, as resources are limited.
Unlike the original Metal Gear, which focused more on stealth, Snake's Revenge leans heavily into action elements, with more frequent combat sequences and less emphasis on sneaking past enemies. Players can still use disguises and tactics to avoid confrontations, but the game often pushes them into firefights, making it feel more like a traditional action game than a pure stealth experience. Boss battles punctuate the action, providing challenging encounters with well-armed enemies that require quick reflexes and strategic use of Snake's arsenal.
The game’s visual presentation is solid for the NES, with detailed environments and varied enemy designs that help keep the levels feeling distinct. The music and sound effects complement the tension of sneaking through enemy territory or engaging in high-stakes combat. However, the difficulty level can be unforgiving at times, especially during certain sections where precise timing and resource management are crucial for survival.
Despite being a non-canonical entry in the Metal Gear series, Snake's Revenge carries some of the core elements of the franchise, such as espionage, tactical planning, and infiltration. While it didn’t achieve the same critical acclaim as later Metal Gear titles, it remains a notable example of early stealth-action games on the NES, offering a challenging, action-packed experience for fans of the genre.
