Soaring Blanket - Original Kirby-inspired 8Bit Tune
703After a little over a year, I've finally returned to 8bit style! Rather than do a remix of an existing song, I felt more inspired to take an original composition sketch I created last year and adapt it for the NES/Famicom.
When I originally created the sketch, I was studying and attempting to imitate the style of Jun Ishikawa, Kirby's original & main music composer. To describe his style, it would be "carefree melancholy"... meaning that while there's often a cheerful melody and an upbeat rhythm, there's usually a moment in each of his tracks where the tone shifts to something darker and more mysterious. No Ishikawa track stays in one mood - each track is a journey that travels deeper and deeper until it eventually arrives at the beginning again. Next time you're listening to Kirby music (think Dream Land 3, or Return to Dream Land), pay attention to these ideas and you'll notice that Kirby's world has a very unique tonal freedom that other franchises don't. These were some of the ideas I was conscious of while writing this track.
When converting my sketch to 8bit, though, I think it gained more of a "Kirby's Block Ball" feel to it, especially in the instrumentation. And that's a great thing, because that's one of my favorite Kirby soundtracks - and here's a bonus fact: Block Ball and its music wasn't even developed by HAL, it was developed by TOSE! They nailed the music though as a totally new developer, so in a way, this song is also coming from a similar creative standpoint.
