Soldier Of Fortune 2 - Review
With the nostalgia goggles torn from my eyes, SoF2 has been an interesting experience. On one hand, yes - it's a more technically competent game on a good few fronts, the AI is a lot sharper and the variety of weapons are pretty solid, but there's a lot that gets in the way of the game being genuinely 'fun'.
A bland plot, coupled with largely repetitive environments bog down a handful of genuinely interesting and aesthetically pleasing moments that reminded why I had so much fun with the original game. If SoF was the tongue-in-cheek pulp novel, this is the penned-by-committee 'gritty' reboot that ticks all the boxes but doesn't capture the same magic that the first game had. It's a shame, because until I'd played the original game, I'd always held this up on a pedestal - one I can now honestly say I don't think it deserved.
Ah well, we live and we learn.
