Solving the riddle before you hear the riddle

In Shadowgate for the NES (and also the 8-Bit Adventures Archive port on Steam!) there's a certain part of the game where you are required to solve the riddle of the Sphinx before you proceed. But there's a super simple glitch you can exploit to pass the Sphinx without ever knowing the riddle!

Normally in the Sphinx room, when you try to pass the Sphinx, he will halt you and ask one of six (I think?) randomly generated riddles. To solve the riddles, you need to BRING HIM THE ITEM that corresponds to the answer of the riddle.

For example, one of his riddles is something like I HAVE RIVERS BUT NO WATER, VILLAGES BUT NO PEOPLE and obviously the answer is to hand him a MAP which can be found in another room within the castle.

However, by default, the game's internal "riddle value" let's call it, is always set to the same number UNTIL you try to pass him, at which point, the number and riddle are randomly selected.

So, if you simply hand him the BROOM before speaking to him or trying to pass him, he will accept this BROOM as the correct answer to his riddle - the one he hasn't asked you yet!

So in other words, if you hand him the BROOM before doing anything else, you will always solve the riddle.
